Cover of a 2024 faith songbook from Church of the Nazarene Boksburg with a stylized dove symbol.

Dear worshipper,

Christian music has changed! I don’t think you need to be a rocket scientist to have figured that out. Up until recently, most churches around the world sang the same songs. However, with the advances in technology in the past 30 years, recording and distributing music has become a lot easier.

As a result, we have thousands of songwriters around the world writing thousands of wonderful songs of praise and worship, and most of them can be heard at the click of a button. Suddenly, instead of most churches singing the same 100 songs, we have thousands upon thousands to choose from.

Additionally, with the prevalence of projector screens in modern churches, the popularity of songbooks has decreased significantly. Where previous generations cherished their songbooks (in some cases, as second to the Bible!), newer generations don’t see the need for such things, because once again, the lyrics of almost any song can be found on a computer or mobile device at the click of a button.

Nonetheless, here at COTN Boksburg we have felt the need for a new songbook, which we will use in various contexts. You will find some of the more popular congregational worship songs of the past 20 years added in. We have left in many great hymns of centuries past and choruses of decades past, trying our best to find a suitable balance of new and old.

And so please, doenjoy worshipping the King of kings with these terrific “faith songs”! And as we gather to worship, let us remember these words of John Wesley:

“Sing lustily, and with a good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength. Be no more afraid of your voice now, nor more ashamed of its being heard, than when you sung the songs of Satan.”

Blessings,

Ps. Luke Powell

Bless the Lord oh my soul, oh my soul

Worship His Holy name

Sing like never before, oh my soul

I'll worship Your Holy name

The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning

It's time to sing Your song again

Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me

Let me be singing when the evening comes

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger

Your name is great, and Your heart is kind

For all Your goodness I will keep on singing

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

And on that day when my strength is failing

The end draws near and my time has come

Still my soul will sing Your praise unending

Ten thousand years and then forevermore

A new commandment I give unto you

That you love one another as I have loved you

That you love one another as I have loved you

By this shall all men know that you are my disciples

If you have love one for another

(repeat)

If a man says he loves God then he is a liar

If he hateth his brother whom he has seen

For how can he love God whom he has not seen?

Abba Father, let me be Yours and Yours alone

May my will forever be evermore Your own

Never let my heart grow cold, never let me go

Abba Father, let me be, Yours and Yours alone

Blessed Jesus touch my life, come and live in me

Cleanse me from all sin and strife, Jesus set me free

Fill my heart with Your great love, never let me go

Blessed Jesus, let me be, Yours and Yours alone

Holy Spirit fill me now with Your mighty fire

Let me only want to do just what You desire

Always guide and comfort me, don't from me depart

Holy Spirit always stay deep within my heart

Abide with me! fast falls the eventide

The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide

When other helpers fail and comforts flee

Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day

Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away

Change and decay in all around I see

O Thou who changest not, abide with me

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings

But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings

Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea

Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me

I need Thy presence every passing hour

What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?

Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless

Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness

Where is death’s sting? where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if Thou abide with me

Above all powers, above all kings

Above all nature and all created things

Above all wisdom and all the ways of man

You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones

Above all wonders the world has ever known

Above all wealth and treasures of the earth

There's no way to measure what You're worth

Crucified, laid behind a stone

You lived to die, rejected and alone

Like a rose trampled on the ground

You took the fall, and thought of me

Above all

All heaven declares

The glory of the risen Lord

Who can compare

With the beauty of the Lord?

Forever He will be (echo)

The Lamb upon the throne (echo)

I gladly bow the knee (echo)

And worship Him alone

I will proclaim

The glory of the risen Lord

Who once was slain

To reconcile man to God

Forever You will be (echo)

The Lamb upon the throne (echo)

I gladly bow the knee (echo)

And worship You alone

All over the world, the Spirit is moving

All over the world

As the prophet said it would be, hallelujah

All over the world

There's a mighty revelation

Of the glory of the Lord

As the waters cover the sea

Right here in this place, the Spirit is moving

Right here in this place

As the prophet said it would be, hallelujah

Right here in this place

There's a mighty revelation

Of the glory of the Lord

As the waters cover the sea

Deep down in my heart, the Spirit is moving

Deep down in my heart

As the prophet said it would be, hallelujah

Deep down in my heart

There's a mighty revelation

Of the glory of the Lord

As the waters cover the sea

All things bright and beautiful

All creatures great and small

All things wise and wonderful

The Lord God made them all

Each little flower that opens

Each little bird that sings

He made their glowing colors

He made their tiny wings

The rich man in his castle

The poor man at his gate

He made them, high or lowly

And ordered their estate

The purple headed mountains

The river running by

The sunset and the morning

That brightens up the sky

The cold wind in the winter

The pleasant summer sun

The ripe fruits in the garden

He made them every one

The tall trees in the greenwood

The meadows where we play

The rushes by the water

To gather every day

He gave us eyes to see them

And lips that we might tell

How great is God Almighty

Who has made all things well
